Fort Greene was named in honor of General Nathanael Greene and was constructed in what is now Fort Greene Park, located in the heart of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is also home to several historic buildings and landmarks, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower.
The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts opened its doors in Fort Greene in 1999. It is the first African diaspora museum in the United States.
The Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument is a memorial located in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, New York. It commemorates the more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who died in captivity aboard British prison ships during the American Revolution. The monument was dedicated in 1908 and is the first memorial in the United States to honor Revolutionary War martyrs.
